Worst crashes from Red Bull Rampage 2013

It's a hard landing ... way down there.

During the week of September 21, 2014, the rugged terrain of southern Utah will once again host the world’s most skilled freeride mountain-bike riders, who will return to the desert for the sport’s premier event, Red Bull Rampage.

The week-long event attracts slopestyle riders, downhill racers and natural-terrain freeriders together in one big-mountain test of all-around bike skill on near-vertical sandstone ridges near Virgin, Utah.

Competitors arrive, hike around the mountain and will typically spend several days building a line that will both challenge their skillset and impress the judges.

To understand just how gnarly this terrain is, check out the gnarliest crashes from the 2013 event in the video above.

After days of digging out obstacles, berms and lines from the raw landscape, a rider’s first time testing his full line can sometimes not come until the announcer calls his name for qualifying. When it works, it’s magical. But when the line doesn’t work, the result could be one of the crashes above.

One thing is certain: Red Bull Rampage competitors are a different breed.
