Revisiting Highway 395

The eastern Sierra holds a special place in bike history

In California’s eastern Sierra, mountain bike history is part of the culture, with the famous Kamikaze Downhill getting its start on the slopes of White Mountain and later moving to Mammoth to join the nearby Sierra 7,500 race.

Brian Vernor, Chris McNally and Moi Medina headed out of Los Angeles to score a few final trail days and explore the history of past races. They didn’t follow the old trails exactly, but the mountains and terrain are the same today as they were when they originally inspired the early days of mountain biking.
