Bikepacking can be as much a sufferfest as it is rewarding. In “Waiau-Toa Odyssey,” three adventurers, a filmmaker, and a photographer decided to add rafting into the mix. They set off on a six-day, 300-kilometer unsupported journey. By combining new bikepacking and packrafting technology, they linked together white-water rivers and backcountry tracks through New Zealand’s wilderness. To add to the drama, only months before a massive earthquake changes their plans and reveals opportunities to explore new landscapes.
