The Athertons and Fort William have a long history. Both Gee and Rachel have been racing it twice a year since early in their careers. Once in the British Downhill series and once in the World Cup series. Last weekend was the World Cup. Despite their long history, the weekend didn’t come together as they hoped.
Only a few pedal strokes out of the starting gate, Rachel’s chain snapped. A few minutes later, in the new woods section, she went over the bars. Still, she was able to get up quickly and had a monumental run of tucking and pumping, resulting in a third place finish.
When Gee dropped in, a top ten finished looked good, until a mistake at the end vaulted him back to 15th for the day. He was bested by his teammate Charlie Hatton, who came in 14th.
With Leogang this weekend, the Athertons don’t have time to dwell on Fort William results, they’re off to Austria.
