Snowy Cyclocross Race Is Pandemonium

Traction Level: Impossible

Unlike most sports, Cyclocross is a discipline of cycling that relishes bad weather. Cross races are at their best when the mud is deep and the going slow.

An early December Cyclocross World Cup ran into a different obstacle: snow. See the utter chaos at the Val Di Sole Cyclocross World Cup below.

In this video, Riders attempt steep hills in the middle of the race. While hills that require running are common in cyclocross, they are not often covered in snow. Pandemonium results. Like flatlanders on the ski access road, two riders slip after dismounting and struggle to even stand on the snow.

The poor surface in the Val Di Sole World Cup is a feature, not a bug. The series would not visit the mountains of Italy in December if they did not want snow. Mixing it up for a round makes for iconic visuals.

In 2021, Wout Van Aert’s effort in the snowy race went viral on Instagram. See the extended highlights of that race below.
