Male Slopestyle Riders Release Official Statement Clarifying Absence
Rotorua, New Zealand - March 25th, 2024 - The first diamond level Crankworx slopestyle event to feature a women's field went off yesterday and was wildly successful. Amidst that success, the men's field released a collective official statement as to why they weren't competing after a series of unclear statements and general confusion.
Take a look at the more clear official statement from the riders below.
The riders are looking for more support from Crankworx to make the financial burden of traveling across the world for competitions more manageable. One of the main points they enumerated was that Crankworx needs to provide food and housing for athletes as well.
The release points out first and foremost that athletes want safer working conditions. Though they weren't expressedly clear in the release what that means but it is fair to assume that they want the event to work around the weather not around broadcast times as was the case at Crankworx Whistler last year.
Another major sticking point from this more polished announcement was that the athletes are pushing for appearance fees. This is not a common practice in any other discipline of the sport but, it is expensive to travel for mountain biking no matter if it is your job or not.
The thing that the riders wanted to make abundantly clear was that this is not a shakedown for more pay and that they really just want to see a change in the way they, as the marquee event, are treated.
