Australian Rider Has A Very Close Call With An Unlikely Animal
More often than not when we see animal encounter clips around mountain biking it's the Mountain West special: bears, mountain lions, moose, that sort of thing. In Australia, however, the ordinary is rarely the case.
Andy Barlow, a 50 year old rider, can tell you a lot about Australian animal encounters. He had a very close one in the You Yangs on January 11th. Check out his run-in with a brown snake below.
Andy goes into detail about his full story behind the post in the caption, by his account, it was a best case scenario encounter.
He made the right call by not trying to ride back to his car even though in the end he was only dry-bitten - meaning the snake didn't deposit any venom into him when it caught him. If he did have venom in his bloodstream, elevating his heart rate would have circulated that venom even quicker and been much more dangerous.
In instances like this one, it is much better to be safe than sorry and to take advantage of modern medicine and the ability of first responders to get to most incidents fairly quickly. Not only are we glad to see that Andy is alright, we also want to thank first responders everywhere for their work. Without them, sports like mountain biking would be exponentially more dangerous.
