After riding for 4 days and 250 miles, with nearly 30,000 feet of climbing the German rider Ben Sonntag bested American rider Alex Grant, and Costa Rican local and five-time La Ruta winner Federico Ramirez in a tight race that had the top three riders separated by less than 5 minutes.

For the women, Angela Parra from Colombia took the win edging out Americans Louise Kobin and Rebecca Rusch.

Sam Schulz, who ended up in tenth place, said luck was not on his side this year. Schultz rode with the lead pack for stretches of time, but five flat tires throughout the race slowed ended his hopes of a podium. Even though Schultz experienced some mishaps he still had an excellent time. As Schultz was fixing his third flat tire a rider asked how he's doing. He looked up with a grin and said, "How can I have a bad time in such a beautiful place?"
