New Mountain Bike Speed Record set at 138 mph

54-year-old Eric Barone does it again

At 7:38 am on March 28th, 54-year-old Frenchman Eric Barone broke his own mountain bike speed record on a nearly vertical snow track in Vars, France. His maximum speed was 223.30 kph (138.75 mph), which is just a hair faster than his previous 222.22 kph (138.081 mph) record, which he set in 2000.

Eric had a brutal crash in 2002 when his bike separated at the headtube while he was attempting a new record on the slopes of the Cerro Negro volcano in Nicaragua, an incident which kept him off the bike for several years before he decided to have another go at the world record. You can watch the footage of that crash below.
