11 Questions – Seb Kemp

Seb Kemp is a jack of all trades, master of none. Depending on the day of the week or time of the year he will tell you he is either a freelance writer (read as a financially struggling modified monkey), a trail builder (read as shovel-f*cking mother nature) or a mountain bike coach and guide (read as know-it-all big head). The Bike mag staff hates him because they can’t catch him going up hills or down, and they spend most of their trail time watching him air over their heads.

1 — Describe the perfect hamburger.
Fergburger in Queenstown, NZ. I would order anything from their menu, with fries and wasabi sauce as a side, then walk across the road to hang out with the boys in Vertigo Bikes. The best way to digest a good burger is with laughs.

2 — Who are your heroes or role models?
Shane Smith.

3 — What would you be doing if you never discovered bikes?
Same but different. Still having fun. Bikes are just a means to an ends.

4 — Where is the most interesting place on earth?
In an unfamiliar town, three or four beers in, with no fixed plans, no agenda, an inquiring mind, and nothing to do the next day.

5 — Who is your favorite musician or band (right now)?
Certainly Bison B.C. after the month of Bellingham but also the Notorious-XX mixtape by Wait What.

6 — What was your first bike?
Rupert the Bear bike. Stabilizers, tassels, basket and chain guard.

7 — If you could play any instrument, what would it be?
Drums. I used to think guitar but too many poofters have ruined guitars by playing acoustic covers of Oasis or Jack Johnson on the beach or at house parties.

8 — Who do you think is the best bike rider of all time?
I don’t think it’s possible to quantify which rider had/has the most fun, so this question doesn’t matter.

9 — What is on the perfect pizza?
It’s not what is on the pizza, but what the pizza is on that matters. Thin base is the only way.

10 — If you could have coffee and conversation with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
With a 19 year old Seb Kemp when he was blind drunk on the Isle of Skye for 48 hours. I would ask him what the hell happened in those lost hours, how he woke up in a cell, and where his bag went.

11 —Describe yourself in three words.
Besides the point
