1/22/04 - I'd just flung my lucky "Green Eggs & Ham" baseball cap into the driver's seat of my car, popped a fresh piece of gum into my mouth and was slipping my helmet onto my head--a pre-ride routine I'd followed just about every Sunday morning since March.

5-1-07 // Previewed: 2008 Shimano XT
In 1982, what started as a phone call from Yoshi Shimano to the HQ in Japan about a growing cycling movement resulted in a full set of components designed specifically for mountain bikes. Shimano Deore XT was born. One quarter of a century later, Deore XT still represents a component set designed to take on the challenges dished out by modern day aggressive mountain bike riders on severe terrain.

Way down south, at the very tip of Baja California, where sun-baked mountains meet turquoise seas somewhere south of the Tropic of Cancer, Shimano earlier this week doled out the first early test samples of its new and improved Deore XT component line.

5-15-07 // Events: Qashqai Urban Challenge In Milan
The Qashqai Urban challenge is unlike any other event. A touring band of freeride, street and dirt jumping’s elite battling it out for cold cash and a new car as they travel to a handful of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Unlike most World Cup events that are held at ski resort, Qashqai truly is bringing mountain bikes to the people by choosing these urban locales. This week, Qashai stopped in Milan, Italy for a dirt jump competition that pushed the rider’s abilities and imaginations to new levels.
5-16-07 // Online Exclusive: An 18 Hours of Fruita Brief
Rolling down I-70 again to escape the never-ending winter of the Colorado high country. The last three weekends have seen the treads on my tires leaving prints in the dirt in Fruita and Moab. This weekend I will not be riding as much as assisting a friend who is literally coming off the couch to warm up with an 18-hour race.
5-16-07 // Video: The Bails Section from Second Coming
Every mountain bike video has one—the crash segment, it’s probably one of the most watched segments of any video. Mountain bikers aren’t any different from those fools sitting on the freeway jamming up traffic while they gawk at an inverted Explorer in the fast lane. Usually you have to be a rock star rider to be in a MTB video segment, but in this clip from Second Coming all you have to be is a carcass.
5-17-07 // Online Exclusive: Bike To Work Day
Bike Month, including Bike To Work Day on Friday May 18, was started over fifty years ago in 1956. Since that time a federal transportation bill has set aside more than $5 billion for bicycling with the goal of making it easier and safer to recreate and commute on a bicycle in the United States. Bike Month, and Bike To Work Day in particular, are celebrated by hundred of thousands of people across the country every year.

5-21-07 // Trail Report: Santa Ana River Trail
The San Gabriel Mountains rise from the desert of Southern California to 13,000 feet. With a yearlong drought turning many of the region’s trails into dust bowls, the mountains offer a welcome respite from the heat. There are dozens, if not hundreds of trails lacing these craggy peaks, but one of the best is the Santa Ana River trail.
5-22-07 // Online Exclusive: Man the Shuttle Plane!
This was the first mountain bike float-plane trip of the season. A week earlier, our guide, Erin Heintzman, had hiked the Gun Creek Trail with a rowdy crew of high school students. She claimed the trail was in good condition, but that a major river crossing had been flooded with raging water. From the plane, Erin could see that the waters had receded, but exactly how we would cross the still-churning river was a problem that was miles of winding, scenic singletrack away.
