First Look: SRAM GX Drivetrain Components

1x11 at a price that won't rattle your fillings

SRAM GX brings 11-speed performance and technology formerly restricted to the more expensive XX1, X01 and X1 groups to a more affordable price. With a retail tag of $564 for the 1×11 setup, these new drivetrains are sure to be a popular choice amongst OEM and aftermarket buyers alike. Based on what we received from SRAM, these new components will replace both the X7 and X9 drivetrains. This is a pretty big deal, actually: pushing into this price bracket will make the simplicity of 1×11 attainable to more riders, which we think is a good thing. But it’s more than just 1×11, it’s actually three different drivetrains pulling from a common pool of components to create 1×11, 2×11 and 2×10 options.

SRAM GX 1×11

Availability: July 2015
Group Pricing: $564 with trigger shifter // $573 with grip shifter

The GX 1×11 option features much of the same technology as SRAM’s current X1 drivetrain, which retails between $898 and $961 depending on crank choice.

SRAM GX Crankset

GX 1x CRANKSET

The GX 1x crankset comes in two flavors: the hollow aluminum GX-1400 is the pricier option, and is the crankset that will be sold with the drivetrain. Interestingly, at a claimed 680 grams it weighs in 120 grams lighter than the X1 crankset. The more affordable GX-1000 is made of solid 6000-series aluminum, and, at 720 grams comes in 130 grams lighter than the comparable X1 1000 crank. All aforementioned weights are for 175mm GXP cranks with a 32-tooth chainring. Both cranksets are Boost™ 148 compatible, so expect them to be standard issue on many of the 27.5+ bikes due to be announced any day now.

FEATURES
• Open Core Technology AL (GX-1400 Crankset; shown above–right)
• 6000 series AL (GX-1000 Crankset; shown above–left)
• CNC machined 7075, two-tone anodized X-SYNC™ chainring (30-32-34-36-38)
• Bottom bracket configurations: PressFit 30, BB30, GXP, and PressFit GXP
• Chainring guard option
• Crank lengths: 175, 170
• Colors: Black, Red
• 24 and 30mm options
• Boost™ 148 compatible
• Technologies: X-SYNC™
• Weight: 680g (GX-1400, GXP, 175mm, 32t); 720g (GX-1000, GXP, 175mm, 32t)

SRAM GX rear derailleur

GX 1×11 X-HORIZON™ REAR DERAILLEUR

The GX 1×11 rear derailleur is very similar to the X1 model, and features all of the same technology. Taking away the carbon and simplifying machining allows SRAM to bring the price down with a minuscule 9-gram weight gain from X1.

FEATURES
• 12-tooth X-SYNC™ pulley wheels
• Large upper pulley offset automatically adjusts chain gap
• Sealed cartridge bearings
• Aluminum cage
• Colors: Black, Red
• Technologies: X-HORIZON™, X-ACTUATION™, X-SYNC™, ROLLER BEARING CLUTCH™, CAGE LOCK™
• Weight: 265g

SRAM GX 1x11 Shifter

GX 11-SPEED TRIGGER SHIFTER

With a claimed 1 gram weight difference, the GX 11-speed trigger shifter is likely identical to the X1 version.

FEATURES
• Multi-position mounting
• MatchMaker™ compatible
• Aluminum pull lever
• Discrete clamp
• Colors: Black, Red
• Technologies: X-ACTUATION™, MatchMaker™ Integrated
• Weight: 122g

SRAM GX Grip Shift

GX 11-SPEED GRIP SHIFT

The GX Grip Shift features all the same technologies as its cousin in the X01 family, and at a nearly identical weight.

FEATURES
• Full metal, 11-speed indexing
• Three rows of ball bearings provide zero friction or play—reducing the force needed to shift and promoting long-term performance under all weather conditions
• Once the Grip Shift shifter and grip interlock securely, forged aluminum clamps on either end reinforce the assembly by locking tightly to handlebar
• Colors: Black, Red
• Technologies: X-ACTUATION™, SPEED METAL™, ROLLING THUNDER™, JAWS™
• Weight: 144g

SRAM_MTB_GX_Cassette_XG1150_Side_L

XG-1150 FULL PIN™ CASSETTE

The XG-1150 cassette differs from the X01 and XX1 cassettes in that it is not a single unit, but is instead 11 individually stamped cogs pinned together to cut down on manufacturing cost. It weighs 80 grams more than the X1 cassette because the X1 doesn’t use pins to hold together the three unified cogs on the high end.

FEATURES
• 10-42T range
• XD™ driver body compatible
• Technologies: FULL PIN™, XD™ driver body, JET™
• Weight: 394g

PC-X1 CHAIN

As its name suggests, the PC-X1 chain specced with the GX group is the same chain included in the X1 kit.

FEATURES
• SRAM 1x™ specific chain designed with XX1 geometry
• Solid pin construction
• 11-speed POWERLOCK™
• Color: Black/Silver
• Technologies: X-SYNC™, POWERLOCK™
• Weight: 258g (114 links)

SRAM GX 2x11 Cranks

GX 2×11 CRANKSET

The same cranks offered with the 1×11 drivetrain will be offered with the 2×11, but the X-SYNC chainrings are replaced with traditional 36-24t double chainrings. Both are Boost™ 148 compatible.

SRAM GX 2x11 Rear Derailleur

GX 2×11 REAR DERAILLEUR

The 2×11 rear derailleur comes in long- and medium-cage versions, and notably lacks X-HORIZON technology, which is part of what gives the committed 1×11 rear derailleurs such consistent performance. X-HORIZON restricts derailleur movement to the horizontal axis, which makes the derailleur incapable of sucking up enough chain to work with a 2x system.

FEATURES
• Focused chassis design for all conditions and usage
• 10-42 wide range cassette compatible
• Colors: Black, Red
• Technologies: X- ACTUATION™, ROLLER BEARING CLUTCH™, CAGE LOCK™
