New knee pads from TLD, Shimano's winter shoes and more

Troy Lee Designs Raid Knee Guard

Troy Lee Designs Raid Knee Guard

Along with its new line of bright-colored riding apparel, TLD announced these new Raid knee guards at the beginning of the week. More than a featherweight pad, but not quite a full-fledged hardshell protector, the Raids feature a D3O kneecup. A velcro thigh strap keeps the pads in place up high, while a compression strap across the seamless back panel keep things in order around the calf. $115 / troyleedesigns.com

Deuter Attack 20

AP4V0046

Founded in 1898, Deuter first provided post sacks and mailbags for the Bavarian Royal Mail. Little did the German bag makers know that almost 120 years later, they’d still be making bags for people who “send it.” The Attack 20, which takes its name from its 20-liter capacity, includes a foam back protector and is compatible with a 3-liter reservoir (not included). In addition to a hydration pocket, it features a large storage pocket, a fleece-lined sunglass or electronics stash and an organized front pocket. Finishing touches include a rain cover and quick-access mesh pockets on the hip belt. $215 / deuter.com

Shimano MW7 Shoes

Shimano MW7 Shoes

Shimano’s MW7 SPD-compatible stompers promise warm and dry feet during even the nastiest of rides. They come complete with everything you’d expect from a cold-weather shoe: a waterproof Gore-Tex Insulated Comfort Liner, a fleece-lined insole and a lace shield. The 360-degree visibility will be a boon to the search party that finds you buried headfirst in a snowdrift. $250 / shimano.com

Nikwax Washes

Nikwax Washes

Synthetic materials develop a fetid odor all too quickly, and while merino wool fights those odorous microbes, it requires more care. These two washes from Nikwax are specifically formulated for garments of each type. $9.50 for 300 ml / nikwax-usa.com

Z Blok Sunscreen

Z Blok Sunscreen

Thanks to global weirding, we can feature winter riding shoes and sunscreen in the same post. Z Blok’s SPF 45+, broad-spectrum sunscreen comes in a deodorant-esque stick, a storage method developed with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). This zinc-oxide-based push pop of UV protection is fragrance free and can be applied to the face: it rubs on clear amd won’t burn if it drips into your eyes. $10 for the 5-ounce stick / zbloksun.com
