Bontrager’s $700 and $1,200 Carbon Wheelsets

Upgrading to carbon just got less painful

A nice set of carbon hoops has long been regarded as the ultimate blingy bike upgrade. That might all be changing, though, with Bontrager announcing a new lineup of carbon hoops that includes a $1,200, all-mountain worthy offering and a $700 cross-country or light trail option.

Rapid Drive Hubs

At the center of both wheelsets are different versions of Bontrager’s new Rapid Drive hub. The higher-end 108 boasts more intricate machining and 108-point engagement created by two sets of offset pawls and a 54-tooth engagement ring.

The Rapid Drive 54 has taller flanges and J-pull spokes as opposed to the straight-pull DT Aerolites featured on the 108s. More noticeably, it has only one set of pawls and, as you might have guessed, 54 points of engagement. A second set of pawls can be added.

A 29-millimeter internal width will make these hoops amicable to pretty much any tire in the 2.3-2.5 width range, and they’ve been impact tested and approved for aggressive riding. Both 29er and 27.5 versions are available, laced to Boost-spaced Rapid Drive 108 hubs.

These 28-hole rims are intended for cross-country or light trail duty with a 22.5 millimeter internal rim width to match. The reasonable $700 price tag can mostly be chalked up to these not being new rims: Without fresh production costs to make up for, Bontrager was able to keep the price low. They’re tubeless compatible and ship pre-taped with a valve and valve tool. The Kovees are available now in both 29 and 27.5 diameters, and only with Boost spacing.
