E*thirteen Unleashes Two New Guides
The economy still faces a bumpy road toward recovery, but that’s no reason for your chain to keep dropping. At least, that’s the logic behind E*thirteen’s latest, and affordable, SS+ chainguide. The company recently unveiled the guide, as well as another XC-oriented product called the XCX.
The SS+ is based on the company’s popular SRS+, but at just $89.95 it costs about $60 less than its big brother. The cost savings comes courtesy of a high-tensile chromoly steel backplate, instead of an aluminum one. The SS+ uses fixed-position wear plates, works with 32-36-tooth chainrings and comes with E*thirteen’s turbocharger bashguard. The whole package weighs just 258 grams, and, the company claims, is the lightest price-point chainguide system with a full bashguard on the market.
The company’s other new product, the XCX, might look familiar to some XC racers. E*thirteen first developed the product in 2005, but it saw little use. But as more racers choose to run a single chainring up front, the XCX has found a new following. Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski used the guide at the World Championships in Canberra and seemed impressed. “The E*thirteen XCX chainguide worked flawlessly the first time out,” says JHK. “I didn’t have a single chain skip or issue the entire week.”
The $49.99 cross-country-oriented guide weighs just 56 grams and features 1.5-millimeter backplate spacing with 0.5-millimeter spacers to aid set up. It will work with 32- to 42-tooth chainrings and also comes in a cyclocross version.
