SRAM X1 | $900 – $1,000
If you’re lucky enough to be able to spend a grand on a gift for someone special in your life, there’s almost no better way to spend it than on a SRAM single ring drivetrain. Every now and again an invention comes along that sort of changes mountain bikes as we know them. SRAM 1 x 11 is one of those things. Front derailleurs and chain guides have been on the naughty list ever since they were first dreamt up. They were a necessary evil of riding bikes in rough, hard to reach places. If you got rid of one, you’d need the other–and both were a pain in the ass. Antiquating both of them all at once is extraordinarily freeing.
The price tag to get to throw your front derailleur in the trash is steep. Even X1, two tiers below the top shelf XX1, will cost you between $900 and $1,000, depending on which crank you go with. If you have the means, though, it’s more than worth the price.
