Hi there. As a long time reader of your magazine, I would like to draw your attention to an Irish company that has by far the best cycle vacation website I have ever seen. It is called www.irishbikingtours.com and it is run by the most famous Irish cycling family in the country - the McQuaids, (PAT McQuaid is President of the UCI!). Anyway, the reason I think you should do a story on these guys is they run a spectacular operation. I have been on a few Backroads tours and they don't compare to these guys. Sure a Backroads tour is going to be professionally run, you'll stay in nice places, ride nice Treks etc. etc. But the fun we had with irishbikingtours, (formally Celtic Trails) was far beyond anything we had ever experienced on any of the many bike tours we have done in the past. I have an outside perspective on the 26/29 inch wheel. I have only ridden a 26 inch Mountain bike wheel. I currently ride a 700 centimeter tubular road wheel. I converted 26 inches to (66 cm) I converted 29 inches to (74 cm) I consider this a base. 29 inches is rounded from 73.6? up to 74 cm. Twenty six inches requires less math to be a more accurate 66.? cm. Twenty nine inches for a bike wheel historically recalls a high wheel bike that has proportionately more wheel than bicycle frame. A mountain bike has a primary frame need of a top tube. Anything exceeding the primary need of a top tube puts a Mt. bike in margin of total failure. I think older cyclist desire tubular Mt. bike wheels. They can not function unless as a tubular/clincher. A tubular wheel could easily have a clincher flange or bead built when the tire surface is applied. I have no founding of a tubular clincher as material. Low roll weight is a quality/quantity that quality will always win.

FYI. I sent this email to Cindy Karamitis @ sourceinterlink. Cindy. Hi. I recently began subscribing to Bike magazine and so far I've enjoyed it. However, this weekend, I received via mail an unsolicited "offer" to join the National Rifle Association that used an address that I gave only to Bike magazine. In other words, the NRA sent their piece to me using an address that I gave to Bike and only Bike. I have a special place in my mind and heart for the NRA - and it's not a good place. In selling my subscription address to the NRA or some intermediary mailing house you have violated my sense of good judgment. I like bikes, not rifles. Got it? So, although I enjoy your magazine, your mailing list policy violates my sense of propriety. Please cancel my subscription immediately. Thanks.

As a Canadian transplant in Alabama I was super excited to read the 50 incredible rides article. I drove three hours to Salem, AL, talked to the locals, visited the bike shop, attempted to find the trail and know one knew about it. The bike shop had "heard" someone was riding out there. The people in Salem didn't know what I was talking about and I left after three hours of aimlessly looking for the "Ghost Town Trail" that I drove three hours to ride. All I got was a gas bill and a car full of red clay dust. How can you have a trail as the 50 best if no one has heard of it in the town that it is supposed to be located in? I am now afraid to check out any of the others for fear of the same thing as 5 of the recommended trails are less than 6 hours from me.

This is my first time writing this mag. I am a soldier in Iraq and I just finished reading the July '08 Bike mag here in Iraq, and I just wanted to let you guys know how much I appreciated the editorial letter at the beginning. It is encouraging to me to hear my fellow Americans voice their support for those of us overseas, and not taking for granted the freedoms that still to this day have a heavy price tag. Generosity is an American trademark from those grateful of sacrifice. I also wanted to thank you for a great mag. Besides playing with my children again, hopping on my bike and hitting the trails is the only other thing I think about on a daily basis. I have been riding since I was a teen and there is almost nothing better than to find yourself on a trail having to stop for a minute to take in the absolute beauty of the landscape given to us to fathom. Your magazine has done a wonderful job of taking in that landscape. It helps me realize how proud I am to be an American.

Sometimes he will stop talking about them, but only to tell me how terrible mine are in comparison. I can't take it anymore! hello everybody at bike mag. Im a simple young man from a simple place and, like must of us out there, get my greatest amount of joy and well being from riding my bike. I write to you because I am forced into my own sh*tbike challenge. I used to have two bikes so when one broke I had the other until not to long ago when an ex decided to cut everything that could be cut on a bike and then threw it from a moving vehicle into my driveway for me to find. That really sucked but i still had my numero uno and was happy with that until it broke and for around 2 months now i haven't been able to ride a bike. I moved into a new place recently and in the basement was an old mountain bike that fit me but, you guessed it, is junk. Ive dug up some old parts but its all leftover stuff. Despite all this I'm very grateful I get to ride every day at least. Its been a very difficult time for me and I would like to say a big thanks to you guys for the best mountain bike magazine I know. especially the east coast issue.

I have directions to the Salem, AL. Ghost Town trail if anyone is interested in going to it in the future. I'm sorry that Shane could not get to it. It is in fact, closer to Smith Station than Salem. That might have been the difficulty he had in getting directions. The way to get to it is off HWY 280 Between Opelika, Al and Columbus, GA.

"Logical Progression...?" I must say that I was HIGHLY Disappointed by your lacking review of "Next Years Most Wanted Bikes". First let me start off by questioning why not a SINGLE 29er was featured!!! WEAK! How about the all new Niner RIP9? What about totally new WFO from Niner??? What about the good work that Salsa is doing in the 29er Dept.? I mean really. Let's at least try to keep up with the ever developing times guys. Ive read 2 issues of Bike and love it. Lots of info on where to ride, something you dont get in any other mag. On that note, your last issue on Passportes Du Soleil got me going, but I cant seem to find any other info on the resort except for guided tours. I planned to go there this summer on a solo trip and would like some info on accomodations, bike rentals, etc. As well, how long on average does it take to circle the whole resort? Recently my mind has been flooded with new age, flip-whip, paved landing, slopestyle and street riding coverage, videos, and stories. Even my favorite big mountain and north shore riders now opt to ride the cleanest, smoothest trails. Though these guys are fantastic riders, i think its time we start paying attention to the true "world's best bike handlers." Key word there is "handler." Guys like Andreas Hestler and Chris Rigg could go dh on the world cup circuit, finish top 20 at in the pro field at cross country race, ride trials and street the next morning, and still descend our favorite life service and shuttle trails with 10 times the style, technical prowess, and ease as we do. These guys ride the rough and tumbled trails. Hell! Sometimes they may not even be on a "trail", a bunch of 4 foot high boulders is enough for them. These are the guys I want to ride like, and, if you've ever spent an hour in the driveway trying to do endo-turns and no handed trackstands,

What a coincidence, they day my May 2009 issue, which has the story about Wilderness issues in Montana, hits my mailbox, the front page of my local paper announces the Mt. Hood Legacy bill was approved. Guess what, we lost over 110 miles of what YOUR own July 2004 issue called "some of the best singletrack in the universe". And all the Senators and Congressmen can say is "this is so great for our economy and recreational possibilities!" DUH: bikes can't be ridden in Wilderness. As a FORMER IMBA Rep., I have been involved in this particular Wilderness Proposal for over 4 years. It is a sad day for mountain bikers in the USA. This new Wilderness has sent a bad precedent. If they use this same example in other places, ask MTB'ers to give up 57% of their access in other places, slowly but surely, we will be losing trail mileage from now on. We did our best to refure the enviros and their lies, deciet and backstabbing, but we lost out to a better funded and organized group. RWL177

Hello there all you wonderful(?) people at Bike. I am writing to comment on the Elwell Peak Trail posting in the last issue. I have ridden mountain bikes for over 25 years (I'm 49). This trail ranks as one of the most rewarding I have done (I have also ridden the Cannell Trail). The ticket is to camp at the Lakes Basin Campground off Gold Lake Highway. The trails through Lakes Basin start at your doorstep and offer many loop options. All of the options are technical, hike-a-bike excursions. Elwell can be looped in around four hours. Be prepared for a full-on backcountry experience. Get a good map.

I got my fat, lazy ass on my bike today for the first time in months and it was great. As I lie in bed replaying the ride, I am surprised that I didn't lose more of my riding ability during my hiatus. It dawns on me that what has made me a better rider in the past couple years is my ability to stop over-thinking and just flow with the trail. I used to worry about every rock, wet root, or other little obstacle that stood as a potential disaster zone. Invariably I would squeeze the brakes, stare at the debris in my path, hit that debris, lose traction/balance, and eat some dirt. Soon I came to understand that the little things on the trail will, for the most part, take care of themselves. If I just keep rolling, that little root won’t have the satisfaction of meeting my cheekbone. I am going to try and adapt this to the rest of my life. Hello, I'd be interested to hear your opinion on the following issue. I'm a cyclist out of neccesity rather than hobby as I can't afford a car so I don't buy cycling magazines or speak to people in the community of cycling as such. Because of that I don't know what is thought about people who cycle with IPods on. I have noticed literally hundreds of cyclists wear them and this morning I had to brake and swerve to miss a girl who pulled out in front of me on a old rusty shed of a bike. She was the typical sort of I'm doing my bit for the planet by cycling person with full compliment of rusty bike, fruit basket, flowery dress etc.. I know I shouldn't get picky on this type of cyclist but the two most dangerous things she did was 1. No helmet and 2. Listeneing to a IPod which meant she couldn't hear a thing and was oblivious to me and the other traffic. Hello, my name is Anthony I live in Clermont Florida. I have a good friend that lives in Rutland Vermont his name is Kelly and his wifes name is Krissy. Kelly is a mountain biker. Kelly finished a 200mile ride for MS this past weekend. Kelly was on a joy ride Thursday Aug. 13th. Kelly was heading down hill at about 25miles an hour when a car turned in front of him. Kelly hit the car face first braking almost every bone in his face and has a skull fracture. Kelly rides for alot of different causes in his area. Biking is his life. The reason i'm posting is because Kelly's bike was destroyed. I am not able to buy a bike for him do to my unemployment at the time. Hi I was so stoked !!! to receive my latest issue of Bike mag featuring so many of the best women riders....until I started reading it. Instead of reading detailed info about their training regimens (do they lift? how much wt? what kind of stuff do they do,like practice on a pump track, sprints, what's a typical day consist of); greatest challenges overcome, favorite trails/racecourses, what they do in the offseason,biggest drops/gap jumps; and equipment, it's a bunch of fluff about "do you always wear pearls while racing", and do you worry about being feminine while racing, and feather boas. Give me a break.

Hi, Regarding the Bike magazine article on the rowdy girls in the La Sals, I and many others in the industry were disgusted at their reported lack of respect for other campers in the area. Maybe that was the intent of the magazine, to bring a bad reputation to pro mountain bike chicks. Pretty much every non-pro and pro mountain bike girl rider I've met is a sweet and careful person like 99% of all mountain bikers. Why sensationalize the low life careless rich chick fringe. What ever tour company who sponsored their abuse of the campsites should be banned from the Moab area. What a waste of an otherwise usually great magazine. Why was it printed? Stupid.

Hello Bike Magazine and Websites: You folks have posted Lower Rock Trail Tom's Place, California on your Btrails.com site. This trail ends at the bottom of my neighborhood, Paradise Estates California. I have lived here for twenty years and in the last ten there has been an exponential increase of bike traffic on this once quiet almost unused trail. Nowhere in your website do you mention that this is a MULTIUSE trail used by runners, hikers, fishermen, and cyclists. I run this trail on a regular basis, and in the last few years have really worried about getting run down by a downhill cyclist blasting blind corners since most cyclists only ride this trail downhill. Posting like yours focus attention on once quiet peaceful areas and you are instrumental in causing conflicting trail use and overuse of these areas. You also show no consideration for the residents of surrounding trail areas and their desire for peace and quiet. I suggest you consider the unintended consequences of your postings.

My name is Kyle. I really don't know who the best person to ask this would be, so I'm gonna throw it up here. This kinda of a very unorthodox way of doing this. Just thinking about how much I would love to work in the bike world. Basically, I was seeing if there is any work at BIKE. I have no experience other than riding and racing all categories of bikes. Hi BikeMag, Your November 2009 issue had a short write up on SkullCandy Asym headphones (p.80), stating they had an inline volume adjuster that doubles as a mic for the iPhone. I ordered them based on that feature and there is no mic/volume adjuster on the cables on mine. Is there some confusion on models? Thanks, love the mag! Kat
