Trail Description:
It’s easy to get carried away on the Iron Mountain trail. The initial big, rocky climb out of downtown Damascus feels more like a dried creek bed than a bike path, but after a few miles the trail begins to roll along the long, narrow ridgeline of Iron Mountain, cruising from one gap to the next in the perfect manifestation of instant karma. For every steep, technical climb, you are instantly rewarded with an equally steep, technical downhill. This constant give-and-take dominates the 21 miles of Iron Mountain, tempting riders to push themselves beyond their original intentions. Many riders start out with plans for a 7-mile out-and-back, but quickly find themselves 13 miles in with no desire to retreat. That’s what riding in Virginia is all about. The state is dominated by classic cross-country trails and hardened riders determined to cover distance. From the infamously brutal point-to-point endurance races (100 miles in one day) to the linear trails that cover epic distances, riding in Virginia is about conquering territory. Bookmark and Share

It’s about riding from point A to point B and then back again. Turn your afternoon ride on the Iron Mountain into a weekend excursion, camping in backcountry huts positioned at intervals throughout the trail’s length. Or better yet, hook Iron Mountain up with the 60-mile Virginia Highlands Crest Trail, and you can ride for a week before ever having to turn back to the trailhead. —Graham Averill
