Backcountry.com Unveils Pro Mountain Bike Team

Today, online retailer of premium outdoor and bike gear, backcountry.com, announces the launch of its first-ever professional Mountain Bike Team. The seasoned squad will compete in major North American cross-country and stage races throughout the year including: Sea Otter Classic, The Whiskey 50 (backcountry.com is the title sponsor), BC Bike Race and the 2014 Pro XCT Series. The team will also compete at the Mongolian Bike Challenge.

“We had no idea what to call them,” Gary recalls, “so we put a piece of paper on the counter and invited people to write down suggestions for a name. And this local guy named Jake, he came up with the name dobies, but I don’t know where he got it from. I thought it sounded pretty good. It’s a bit confusing though, since some customers call them “dobbies” with two Bs, and some call them doobies, with two Os, which they are neither.”

German Gearbox Makes An NAHBS Splash On Reeb Mountain Bike

Reeb is one of the first American companies to incorporate the German-built Pinion gearbox on one of its bikes. The 18-speed gearbox is mounted to a specially modified Reebdonkadonk rigid fatbike frame. The Gates belt drive propels 29-inch wheels mounted with 3-inch-wide Surly Knard tires.

Student Bike Builders Turn Up At N.A. Handmade Bicycle Show

At the North American Handmade Bicycle Show this weekend (NAHBS), a handful of students wanted to show the nation’s best bike builders that they, too, were masters of the craft. The students are enrolled in Professor Steve McGuire’s bike-building class at the University of Iowa’s art school. Class enrollment is spread fairly evenly between engineering students, like graduate student Ryan Grant, and art students, such as Jim Busby. It’s believed the program is one of only two such classes in the nation.
